Before You Start Editing

A little preparation makes timeline work faster and prevents missing files when a project is reopened.

Start a Project and Add Media

Create a project, choose its frame shape, then import source files or record audio before arranging the timeline.

Create the project and add source files

The Material workspace keeps imported files available beside the preview and timeline.

Import video, image, and audio files into the Material library.

1. Open Video Editor Pro and create a New project.
2. Choose the aspect ratio required by the final video.
3. Open Material and use Import to add source files.
4. Select a clip and add it to the main video track.
5. Repeat for the remaining clips, images, and audio.

If the project will be reopened later, avoid moving or renaming imported source files in Finder.

Record narration or computer sound

The built-in audio recorder can capture a microphone, computer playback, or both without leaving the editing workspace.

1. Open the audio recording tool from the editor.
2. Choose an input device when you want to record narration or another microphone source.
3. Enable Recording computer sound when the project needs audio playing on the Mac.
4. Use Timeline Mute to prevent existing timeline audio from being captured again.
5. Start recording, stop when finished, and place the new audio in the project.

Make a short test first and check the input level, clarity, and unwanted background sound before recording a full narration.

Edit Video on the Timeline

Use the playhead and timeline tracks to build the main story before spending time on visual effects.

Arrange, trim, split, and join clips

The main track controls sequence and timing, while separate tracks keep text, music, voice, overlays, and effects aligned.

1. Add clips to the main track in the required order.
2. Move the playhead to the first frame you want to change.
3. Use the cut or split control to separate unwanted footage.
4. Remove the unwanted segment and close any resulting gap.
5. Play across each edit and check picture and sound continuity.

Finish the rough cut first. Adding transitions and overlays too early makes later timing changes slower.

Adjust a Selected Video Clip

Open a clip's editing panel when a change should affect that clip rather than the whole project.

Change speed, rotation, zoom, and framing

Use Video controls for motion, orientation, scale, position, and canvas adjustments.

1. Select the clip on the main track and open its edit panel.
2. Use Speed or Reverse when timing must change.
3. Apply flip or rotation to correct orientation.
4. Set zoom and X/Y location to reframe the picture.
5. Choose a color, blur, or custom image for exposed canvas areas.

Correct color and clip audio

Use restrained adjustments and compare the preview before committing the change.

1. Open Color and correct brightness and contrast first.
2. Adjust saturation and tone only as much as the footage needs.
3. Use sharpen and vignette carefully to avoid an artificial result.
4. Open Audio to set volume and fade-in or fade-out time.
5. Enable noise reduction when steady background noise is distracting.

Listen with headphones before export; aggressive noise reduction can make speech sound thin or metallic.

Crop the frame

Crop removes unwanted edges and can change how the subject fills the output canvas.

1. Select the clip and open the crop tool.
2. Drag the crop boundary around the area to keep.
3. Leave Keep Aspect Ratio enabled when the frame shape must remain consistent.
4. Play the preview and check moving subjects near every edge.
5. Click OK to return the cropped clip to the project.

Add Text, Transitions, Effects, and Overlays

Add creative elements after the main timing is stable, then keep each addition purposeful and readable.

Add titles and on-screen text

Text templates can be used for opening titles, labels, captions, dialog, and ending cards.

1. Open Text and choose a suitable template.
2. Add the text element to its timeline track.
3. Replace the placeholder with the final wording.
4. Set its start, duration, size, and position.
5. Preview over both light and dark frames to confirm readability.

Use transitions and visual layers

Transitions connect scenes; effects, overlays, and stickers add visual emphasis on separate tracks.

1. Open Transition and preview a preset between two scenes.
2. Apply one transition and check whether its duration fits the cut.
3. Use Effect, Filter, or Overlay for a visual treatment.
4. Add and position stickers only where they support the message.
5. Review the full sequence so adjacent effects do not compete.

Simple cuts are usually best for instruction and business videos. Reserve stronger transitions for a deliberate scene change.

Add a Watermark or Hide Sensitive Details

Use a watermark for identification or branding, and mosaic when part of the picture must no longer be readable.

Both tools use adjustable regions that can be placed over a selected part of the video.

1. Move the playhead to a frame where the target is clearly visible.
2. Choose Add Watermark or Add Mosaic.
3. Resize and position the region over the intended area.
4. Play through the affected time range and track any movement.
5. Confirm the source detail remains covered before clicking OK.

Save a separate project copy before permanently exporting sensitive footage.

Preview and Export the Finished Video

Complete one uninterrupted review before export, especially around cuts, text timing, audio changes, and privacy masks.

Choose output settings and export

The Export dialog provides separate Video and Audio output choices with format, resolution, quality, and destination controls.

1. Play the project from beginning to end and correct visible or audible problems.
2. Click Export and choose Video or Audio.
3. Select the output format and resolution required by the destination.
4. Set quality and choose an output folder with enough free space.
5. Start the export, then open the finished file and verify playback.

Keep the project and original media until the exported file has been checked on the device or service where it will be used.
